Scientific name:  Cymatogaster aggregata 

Size range:  10-17 cm 

Identifying features:  The shiner perch has several easy-to-spot features that make it unique. Its body is usually a dusky green color with shiny silver sides, giving it a reflective look in the water. Along its body are eight thin, dark horizontal stripes that run from the head to the tail, along with three wider, pale yellow vertical bars. It has one dorsal fin with a spiny front section that contains about 8 to 11 spines, and its anal fin has exactly three spines. The shiner perch also has a forked tail, a small mouth that slants upward, and relatively large eyes.

Habitat:  The shiner perch lives along the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from southern Alaska all the way down to Baja California. It is found in both marine and brackish waters, meaning it can handle areas with lower salt levels. Shiner perch are most commonly seen from the intertidal zone to depths of about 30 meters (100 feet). They prefer habitats like eelgrass beds, kelp forests, and rocky reefs, where there is plenty of shelter and food. These fish live in cool, temperate waters, usually between 8–18 °C, and are often found alongside other marine animals such as striped seaperch, topsmelt, kelp greenling, shore and kelp crabs, shrimp, snails, and other small sea creatures.

Food:  Shiner perch are carnivorous fish that feed mainly on zooplankton and small invertebrates. Their diet includes copepods, larval crustaceans, and benthic invertebrates such as amphipods, isopods, and polychaete worms. They are visual feeders and usually hunt during the day. Shiner perch use a hover-and-pick feeding strategy, where they hover above eelgrass, rocks, or other surfaces and pluck prey from the water column or off surfaces. When they spot prey, they make short, darting strikes, lunging forward quickly. They also use suction feeding, opening their mouth rapidly to create a small suction flow that pulls the prey inside.

Predator:  Shiner perch have several predators, including fish, birds, and marine mammals. Fish predators include lingcod, rockfish, cabezon, and kelp greenling. They are also eaten by birds such as cormorants, gulls, and herons, as well as marine mammals like harbor seals and sea lions. To avoid being eaten, shiner perch often swim in tight schools, which makes it harder for predators to target a single fish and helps them detect danger sooner. They also stay close to eelgrass beds and kelp forests, which provide cover and hiding places. In addition, their silver sides help with camouflage by reflecting light and allowing them to blend into the surrounding open water.

Life cycle:  Shiner perch have an unusual life cycle because they are viviparous, meaning females give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. Fertilization happens inside the female, and although it is not the same as pregnancy in mammals, the female carries the developing young through the winter. The embryos receive nutrients directly from the mother, and gestation lasts about six to seven months. Birth usually occurs in the spring or early summer. A female can give birth to 5 to 36 young, depending on her size. The young are fully formed at birth, able to swim immediately, and are about four to five centimeters long, looking like tiny adults. Shiner perch reaches maturity in about one to two years.
